All areas of the curriculum are addressed through the seven Areas of Learning in the Foundation Stage. This is implemented by planning in a cross curricular approach, allowing children to either access them as a child initiated activity or an adult-led activity.
Children will be taught to:
Listen and appraise
Play musical games
Sing
Play instruments including glockenspiel, recorder, ukulele, keyboards and untuned percussion
Play by ear and begin to read musical notation
Improvise
Compose
Perform
Lessons will be linked to the topic the children are currently studying with their class teacher where possible. Other units of work will stand alone.
Children in Year 3 and 4 are taught to play a musical instrument with a specialist music teacher from Entrust.
At Ravensmead we are a ‘Singing school!’ We regularly sing together as staff and pupils in class, in hymn practice and assemblies.
Music is central to school life at Ravensmead with lots of opportunities to create a real WOW factor! Children will perform at various points during the year: in class assemblies, Harvest festivals, Carol services, Christmas Productions and Summer Productions.
